Understand the Voices
Sophomores at New Mission were given the task to explore different themes, and answer the question: How do we become responsible consumers of social media during the Coronavirus? Josiehanna Colon, Jazmine Johnson, Dane Lee, Jean Marcos Valerio, and Terrell Gethers came together and created a podcast exploring the injustices that have been normalized throughout the pandemic. As a group we explored the reactions of Boston youth through the use of social media, reactions on various other social media outlets outside of Boston, and the acts of comparing oppressions throughout different minority groups.
"The discrimination against Asian Americans and using the corona virus as an excuse to call them racist names and attack them negatively is unnecessary and unacceptable"
- Dane Lee

"Trump deliberately calling the virus a name that has been frowned upon by critics, who say its usage could lead to increased discrimination and racism toward Asian Americans. Scores of Asian Americans nationwide have already reported being targeted in verbal and physical attacks linked to coronavirus fears" - Terrell Gethers

"I feel that as if people are using this pandemic as a way to openly be prejudice towards Asian Americans. If you scroll through Instagram or even twitter you’ll see a large amount of comments that Refers to Asian American as Derogatory terms such as 'bat eaters'" - Jazmine Johnson

"I believe that consumers should not react in such a discriminatory manner towards the Asian community simply because because of the origins of Covid-19. Although the virus is said to have originated in Wuhan China, those who are not Chinese and simply Asian are still being targeted. Wether or not the individuals are of Chinese descent, it not a valid reason to target such hatred and verbal abuse"
- Jean Marcos Valerio

"Boston youth are using platforms like facebook and viewing a post stating the mere claim 'This pandemic should not be used as an excuse to be racist' and normalizing the sets of prejudices that have been introduced throughout this pandemic. We see negative highlights between both Asian and Black communities as both continue to compare each of their set oppressions. Times like this, oppressed groups must come together and fight back the negative outlooks on one another rather than seeing it as 'we have been dealing with this all throughout history', and trying to demean the others oppression"
- Josiehanna Colon
